Code 10/39/42 DVD Drive Problems

If your having a problem with your DVD drive not recognising discs it may be a common problem that is caused by Norton/Itunes/Windows Update.

First of all check Device Manager to see if you are having this problem.


From the Device Manager you will see you DVD/CD-ROM Drive. and it will have a yellow icon on it.


Double click it and this box will appear


n.b. If you dont have a error like this and it reports it is wokring correctly but not showing in start > computer as a device with removable storage you can continue with the below fix anyway.

Close the open windows you have and click start and type "regedit" you can press enter after youve typed this.

 You will then get a User Account Control box to which you will click on continue/yes.

In the registery editor you need to navigate through the folder structure as the picture below describes.
So double click on
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
4D36E965 (single left click this item to get the list to the rightto appear)


Right click the item highlighted (UpperFilters) in the above picture and left click delete and click yes to the warning.
Do the same if you have LowerFilters as well.

Close the registery editor and restart your computer and your disk drive will resume normal operation.
